LFL McNeil At the White House

Los Gatos Morning Rotary (LGMR) Doug McNeil attended President Obama’s Champion of Change reunion in Washington, D.C. in December.  McNeil joined his peers from 41 states covering 10 national focus initiatives. “The opportunity to connect and to share our work that is the result of ideas turned into actions was an incredible experience and one I’ll always cherish.” said McNeil.

Over the past five years Doug McNeil, John Hogan and Jesse Salem of LGMR were honored as Champions of Change at the White House. The trio represents the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno community and 4,000 Bay Area Rotarians of Rotary District 5170.

LGMR’s Lighting for Literacy, (LFL), a grassroots effort designed for Rotary Youth Day in 2012 was recognized in 2014, 2015 and this year for helping students imagine and create better futures for others. LFL teaches STEM to students. In a hands-on, in-class environment students assemble, build and test compact solar powered LED Lighting systems. The STEM program is now being taught in schools across the nation and has been deployed in many parts of the world to help people who are living off-grid.

President Obama’s final quote to our efforts, “I’m Proud of our champions of change –folks who prove that, here in America, there’s no more powerful role than that of a citizen”.
